Woodbert on IF

Of course you're not a toy, Woodbert!

Hi there! Getting back on the Illustration Friday bandwagon with a sketch. It’s been quite a while. Back when I started submitting to IF, I decided to only post digital drawings, but I’ve been neglecting the tablet for a more traditional approach for some time for the quicker turn out, and to stick to a process while I learn to draw.

So here’s a sketch in pencil for the topic: Toy. Woodbert, the oversized dummy. I thought his handler would try to convince him that he’s not a toy, and there’s the hook. To tell you the truth, I started sketching, and when I fell into the weird, creepy, and huge ventriloquist dummy idea, Illustration Friday’s topic blinked at me from the back of my brain. So what better way to say hi to the IF gang than with a weird entry like this one. I hope everyone is doing fine. I intend to post more often to IF, and even dust off the drawing tablet to get my digital mojo going. I really enjoy traditional methods, but the digital magic always calls. I hope you like it. Thanks for your visit, and remember to have a great art time!

Dressing Up

Hi there. Here are some rough sketches, ranging from rough, to slightly rendered. I’m practicing drawing some clothing specific to the Victorian era for a little project. Click on the thumbnails for detail. I ended coming up with this crazy post layout so I could fit the images into this piece. I should have planned a bit better, or just included fewer images, but I wanted to show most of the process I went through. The bowler hat guy on the left is the nicest drawing of the bunch, so if you’re in a hurry, click his noggin.

I started with that top-right one from imagination, and then I called up some reference images to crank up a bit of reality. In general, this all went from warm ups with rough lines, to a little more serious experiments. Here’s this quick and rough top hat guy on the left, trying to get some form down.  The third guy (2nd top hat) got more attention. I know, his head is a tad small, but the hat makes up for it, right? On the left, we have this half-finished sober guy. Half finished because things got quite active at home at the time.  I did have a little fun trying to draw those clasped hands. And the image of the clothes dummy on the right side was more of a concentration test. The fabric was something else. Working that funky tie too.

This was a little journey of discovery. Folds and patterns are fun to draw, although I took my shortcuts. Drawing tweed will be for some other time. I was more interested in the cut of the cloth, and the way it would drape. My purpose is to be able to dress up an unusual character as a Dapper gent. I think I’m ready to enter the “fitting” room.

Ohmu – ink

I’ve been watching Miyasaki films lately, and “Nausaicaa from the Valley of the Wind” was a treat.  These giant creatures called “Ohmu” struck my fancy.  This particular piece started as a sketch for the Impulsive Sketch Journal blog, but time got the best of me, so I decided to ink it, mainly for practice value.  I sketched on a standard sketchbook, and inked using a mix of Faber Castel and Sakura pens and brushpens.  I hope you like this humble fan art piece.  Stay tuned for increased art activity, here, and that the Impulse blog.  Things are starting to happen.  Thanks for visiting, and as always, have a great art time!

Coffee Shop Sketching 2

Coffee shop sketching again. Same bookstore chain, different location (rhymes with “hoarders”). Bigger place, but all tables taken. Had approximately half the time to draw as I did on my first expedition, but I got a good variety in these two sketchbook pages.

Starting on the 1st page, center figure. Sitting lady changed expression halfway through. I don’t care, I’ll draw her different body-language.  Who reads a “coffee table” book at the coffee shop?  Should have captured essentials first.  Difficult to predict these “models”.   Moving along, at the top left, a lady sitting at the exterior “cafe” tables, looking away.  Top right, a short-lived expression.  Right middle, young girl, head down tending her mobile. And at the bottom, the “coffee table book” reading lady’s companion.  They looked happy about what they were doing. He was perched on his chair, leaned towards his laptop screen, staying still enough to draw.

Second page, top left, a girl appearing to be on a date.  Center middle, this lady had a good head and haircut, (those are bangs, not sideburns).  I may have tampered with her ethnicity, and maybe her gender.  I think I mixed features from faces glanced while subject “hunting”.  The lady with glasses is another example of mixed features.  Right before leaving, I decided to cartoon’ it up.  Bottom right, that same happy laptop guy using some of the “toon lines I enjoy drawing.

This, my friends, is all for this post. I’m working on other pieces, and will save and post some progress soon.  For now, thanks for your visit. I really would appreciate comments. It can even be like, “Hey! that looks like my brother in law”, and I’ll appreciate it!  Remember to have a great art time!
